UP Polls: 68 Muslims win, 64 end up as runner-up

Uttar Pradesh has elected 68 Muslims as Member of the State Assembly in the just concluded elections. While as many as 64 other Muslim candidates secured second position in the 403-seat Assembly polls. Out of those 64 seats, at least on six seats Muslim candidates came up as winner.

The 2012 assembly polls for UP have seen rise in the number of Muslim MLAs, both male and female. In 2007, there were 56 Muslim winners. Two of them were women. In 2012, there are 68 Muslim winners. Three of them are women.

In the 2012 polls, the Muslim winner with highest margin of votes (63269) is Mohammad Azam Khan. He secured 95772 votes and retained the Rampur assembly seat on Samajwadi Party ticket. His close rival (Dr Tanveer Ahmad Khan of Congress) was at far distance with 32503 votes. The Muslim winner with lowest margin of votes (just 18) was Ataur Rehman of Samajwadi Party on Baheri seat.
