Astana : A dating website — based on Islamic Sharia law — for Muslims in Kazakhstan with “sincere intentions” to create a family has now been launched in the country.

According to the Kazakh KTK TV channel, the main page of the website — http://nikah1.ru — says that only visitors with “sincere intentions to create a religious family” were allowed to register on the site.

The profiles of those “seeking pleasure and with sinful desires” will be blocked, the website’s organisers said on the main page.

Kazakh religious authorities hailed the idea, saying Muslims needed a website like this for a long time.

“A Muslim man can’t just go up to a woman on the street and ask her to be his friend because Sharia law forbids it. We think such a website will help people meet and create a family,” said Nurmukhamed Iminov, deputy head of the central mosque in Almaty city.
