London : Even though British and US troops plan to pull out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014, Britain will end its combat role in the war-torn country next year.
Under plans to be discussed by British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama, British troops will instead concentrate on providing rapid reaction support and training for Afghan forces, the Daily Express reported.
The plans are scheduled to approved at a NATO conference in May.
Cameron plans to bring home 500 of Britain’s 9,500-strong force by the end of this year.
“The most important thing is that we stick to that plan, we deliver that plan and then we can bring our troops home. My first concern is with British troops and making sure they are properly protected and have the equipment they need,” he said.
Troops have been put on alert after the Taliban vowed revenge attacks following the massacre of 16 Afghan civilians by an American soldier Sunday.
