Baku (Azerbaijan) : At least 22 Azerbaijanis were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of spying for the Iranian military, Xinhua reported.
According to Azerbaijan’s national security ministry, the suspects were secretly recruited by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to collect reports that might compromise Azerbaijan’s national security.
They were to commit terrorist acts against embassies of the US, Israel and other Western states, it said.
Xinhua said the two Central Asian countries have had strained relations in the past.
Iran’s foreign ministry recently accused Azerbaijan of providing a corridor for terrorists to kill Iranian nuclear scientists by allowing Israeli spy agency Mossad to operate on its territory.
