Talking to reporters after taking charge, Sharma said law and order was his biggest priority.

“I would like to assure the people that police would work towards making Uttar Pradesh crime free,” he said, warning criminals to mend their ways.

“The police force will ensure that either the unwanted and criminal elements are in jail or outside the state,” he added. “We will hound the criminals out of the boundaries of Uttar Pradesh.”

A 1977 batch IPS officer hailing from Mathura, Sharma was appointed the state’s top cop Sunday night.

With a new set of senior officials in place, he is likely to brainstorm on measures that would be set rolling to ensure that the rule of law prevails in Uttar Pradesh.
