Kolkata : A Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Monday questioned the presence of leaders like former MP Laxman Seth, arrested for alleged involvement in the 2007 Nandigram violence, in the party.
“I don’t know how these leaders like Laxman Seth have entered a Communist party. Leaders like them should have never been inducted in the party. They don’t deserve to be a member of a Communist party,” said Abdul Rezzak Mollah who is also the chief whip of CPI-M in the assembly.
Mollah, a state committee member of CPI-M, said he had always maintained distance from leaders like Seth in the party.
“They (Seth) were all high profile leaders. They were leaders of 440 volts…. I am a leader of 220 volts. So I used to maintain a safe distance from them,” he said.
However, the CPI-M has already decided to stand behind Seth.
“Law will take its own course. There are a lot of cooked up cases. The nature of this case will be determined through the legal process. We will definitely provide legal help,” CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose had said.
Seth was among the 88 people named in the charge sheet filed Jan 30 in relation to the death of six villagers and disappearance of seven others after armed clashes in Nandigram in West Bengal’s East Midnapore in November 2007.
He, along with CPI-M leaders Ashok Guria and Amiya Sahoo, were Monday brought to Kolkata from Mumbai by a special CID team which had arrested the trio from Chembur area March 17 after a tip-off.
