Thiruvananthapuram : With his victory in the Piravom by-election, Anup Jacob is following in the footsteps of his father and grandmother, who were also legislators in the Kerala assembly.

Anup Jacob, 34, a candidate of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) was Wednesday declared elected in the Piravom by-election defeating his Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) rival by 12,070 votes.

Anup is the son of former minister T.M. Jacob. He beat his father’s old rival M.J. Jacob.

His maternal grandmother Pennamma Jacob was an independent legislator in the fourth Kerala assembly (1970-77) from the Muvattupuzha seat in Ernakulam district.

Anup’s mother Annie Jacob, a senior official with the country’s leading private sector bank Federal Bank, is delighted at her son’s win.

“I knew my son would win with a margin of more than 10,000 votes and I am so happy. My only wish now is that my son should become a very responsible politician,” said Annie Jacob, wiping away tears of joy.

Anup Jacob will be sworn in as legislator Thursday.
