Karunanidhi berates Krishna over Sri Lanka

Chennai : DMK president M. Karunanidhi Thursday accused External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna of not understanding a situation properly before speaking on the subject.

“Though Krishna is a good friend, he does not give his replies after carefully taking stock of the situation,” the former Tamil Nadu chief minister told reporters here.

He was asked to comment on Krishna’s reply to his Sri Lankan counterpart G.L. Peiris that India had not yet taken a decision on the US-backed resolution at the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva on Colombo’s “war crimes” committed in the war against the Tamil Tigers.

Karunanidhi said when the issue was raised in parliament, without worrying about human rights abuses, Krishna replied that India should think twice before taking a stand against Sri Lanka.

According to Karunanidhi, DMK Rajya Sabha members Trichi Siva and Kanimozhi cited India’s stand in respect of South Africa and Bangladesh to press for support to Sri Lankan Tamils.

He said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had declared that India was inclined to support the US resolution on Sri Lanka.

“Even after all this, the reply of Krishna that India has not finally decided (what to do with the resolution) is an attempt to divert the entire issue,” Karunanidhi said.

“We are quite confident that the prime minister will not go back on his promise,” he said.
