Chennai : DMK chief M. Karunanidhi Thursday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to prevent possible attacks on Tamils in Sri Lanka after a UN body voted to ask Colombo to probe rights abuses.
Thanking Manmohan Singh for India’s support to the US resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, he warned of retaliatory attacks on Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority.
In a letter to Manmohan Singh, he said: “News reaching here indicates that there is widespread apprehension among Sri Lankan Tamils about possible attacks on them in view of the UN resolution.
“I request you to kindly prevent all such undesirable developments through your diplomatic channels,” Karunanidhi said.
India and 23 other countries voted in favour of a US resolution in Geneva Thursday urging Sri Lanka to probe alleged human rights abuses during the final phase of the war against Tamil Tigers.
The UNHRC adopted the resolution with 24 votes in favour, 15 against and eight abstentions.
The motion called on Colombo to address alleged abuses of international humanitarian law.
Karunanidhi also faxed a letter to United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi thanking her for India’s support to the resolution.
“The global Tamils will also be thankful to the Indian government in this regard,” he said.
