Ahsan, also a senator, represented Gilani in the contempt of court proceedings in the Supreme Court. Last Thursday, Gilani was convicted for contempt of court and received a 30-second symbolic sentence for refusing to write to Swiss authorities to reopen a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari. He was indicted Feb 13.

Ahsan told the court that the government could not move against Zardari as he was holding the office of president of Pakistan.

“It is the people who will judge the performance of the government, and this right of the people, expressed through their elected representatives, cannot be taken away – should not be allowed to be taken away,” the official APP news agency quoted Gilani as saying in the letter.
