Islamabad: A total of 16 Taliban militants, including four commanders, have surrendered in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region.

The militants, who were part of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, had been involved in terror activities in Kurram Agency, Xinhua reported.

Four commanders — Abdullah, Muhammad Rasham, Walid and Rafiqullah — were among those who surrendered Saturday, said Shahab Ali Shah, a local administrator in Kurram.

The militants, whose faces were covered, told the media in Parachinar town that they belonged to local tribes.

“We have shun all past activities and are now ready to stand with the people and the security forces,” a militant said.

Around 2,500 militants are active in Kurram, an official said. All the surrendered militants will face trial in anti-terrorism courts.
