Rio de Janeiro : Nearly 300 people broke into a jail in the northeastern Brazilian town of Tapiramuta, dragged a suspected murderer out of his cell and burned him to death, a media report said.
Lucas Pinho de Jesus, 21, was under arrest in connection with the killing last weekend of a blind, 82-year-old man, Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper said Tuesday.
Sources in the Bahia state police said that a mob killed the prisoner, but did not provide any further details.
Only one officer was on duty at the station at the time of Monday night’s incident, policeman Cassiano Santos told Folha.
Pinho de Jesus had reportedly confessed to killing the elderly man.
No one has been arrested for the lynching in Tapiramuta, a town of some 16,000 people that lies 350 km from Salvador, the state capital.
