Supporters of the Mirwaiz Umer Farooq-led moderate Hurriyat group shouted slogans and objected to a speech made by Muhammad Nayeem Khan of the Democratic Freedom Party.

Another group in the audience supporting Khan challenged them and the groups exchanged blows.

The seminar was not attended by the Mirwaiz as he had been placed under house arrest by the authorities in his uptown Nigeen residence.

Separatist leader Shabir Shah later told reporters that those speaking against the Hurriyat constitution should have been served a notice, an oblique reference to the moderate Hurriyat spokesman and former chairman Abdul Gani Bhat.

Bhat had ruffled many feathers earlier this month with his statement that the United Nations resolutions on Kashmir were no longer applicable.
