Tripura announces pension, housing schemes for journalists

Agartala : The Tripura government Tuesday announced pension and housing schemes for the journalists of the state.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar told reporters: “Under the scheme, all accredited journalists including photojournalists, would get Rs.1,000 per month as pension when they attain 60 years of age and retire from their job.”

However, the accredited journalists and photojournalists in the state have to work in the profession at least for ten years. The pension scheme would be enforced with effect from May this year.

The chief minister has also announced a housing scheme for the homeless journalists in Tripura and sanctioned Rs.3 lakh for the “Working Journalists Welfare Fund,” that is operational since 2000.

Various journalists’ bodies, including the Agartala Press Club, have been demanding for lunching pension and housing schemes for media persons in the state.
