Delhi heart transplant patient leading normal life: Doctors

New Delhi : A 44-year-old woman, who was Delhi’s first heart transplant recipient an year ago, has recovered and is leading a normal life, said doctors at the private hospital here Wednesday monitoring her post-operative progress.

Sunita, a resident of Karol Bagh, was operated upon at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) May 17, 2011. She was experiencing breathing problems due to dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition where the pumping chambers of the heart become weak and dilated.

“The first year after transplantation is beset with episodes of rejection and infection. Now that the critical period is behind her, Sunita is enjoying a good, healthy and productive life,” said Sujay Shad, director of hospital’s heart transplantation department.

A brain-dead person’s heart was donated to Sunita, said doctors.
