Kozhikode : One of the seven men who killed former CPI-M leader T.P. Chandrasekharan has been arrested in what police sources said Wednesday was a significant breakthrough.
Shijith, who was picked up Tuesday night from near Kannur, has confessed to the crime, police sources said.
According to him, he was one of seven people who were in a car that knocked Chandrasekharan down.
The assailants threw a bomb to scare away people and then hacked Chandrasekharan.
Shijith has reportedly revealed that a few leaders of the Communist Party of India-Marxist in Kannur facilitated his treatment in a clinic after his hand was injured during the murder.
Later, he was shifted to a hospital. When news of the crime spread, some other CPI-M leaders provided a car for him to travel to Karnataka.
So far, police have arrested 16 people in the case. Seven of them are known CPI-M activists.
Chandrasekharan, 51, a popular leader in Onchiyam, was killed May 4 while returning home on his motorcycle.
