Guwahati: BSF troops deployed along the India-Bangladesh border have arrested a hard core cadre of the Meghalaya-based militant outfit Hynnewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a BSF spokesman said Saturday.
The Border Security Force spokesman told IANS that the cadre was arrested Friday evening while trying to sneak over to the Indian side from Bangladesh near Dawki.
The apprehended cadre has been identified as Poli Thangsan (33) alias Suk, the spokesman said adding that the cadre hails from the Jaintia Hills region of Meghalaya.
“He had joined HNLC in the year 2007 after being motivated by a senior cadre of the outfit. Soon after joining the HNLC, the cadre underwent arms training in Niharpunjee in Moulvi Bazar district of Bangladesh. The cadre was also involved in various cases of extortion by the outfit in Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills districts of Meghalaya from the coal exporters,” said sources.
