New Delhi : India Sunday paid homage to its first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 48th death anniversary.
President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress president Sonia Gandhi paid floral tributes at Shanti Van, Nehru’s memorial here.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath were also present at the memorial, which was marked by an all religion prayer session.
Nehru was born in Allahabad Nov 14, 1889. He died in Delhi May 27, 1964.
One of the principal leaders of the Indian freedom struggle along with Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru became the first prime minister of the country after independence, a post which he held till his death.
