On Board Air India One : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Tuesday that detailed discussions on border issues had been held with Myanmar during his three-day visit to the country.
“I have an assurance that they (Myanmar authorities) will make every effort” to thwart operations against India (by rebel groups), Manmohan Singh told reporters Tuesday night while returning home.
We “do recognise problems are similar”, he added.
Manmohan Singh had met Myanmar President Thein Sein Monday following which the two countries had inked a dozen agreements.
A joint statement issued after the meeting said both leaders agreed on fighting “the scourge of terrorism and insurgent activity in all its forms and manifestations”, a reference to the festering issue of Indian rebels operating from inside Myanmar.
The visit saw the two leaders agree to “cooperate in the areas such as border area development, transportation, connectivity, agriculture, trade and investment, promotion of friendly exchanges and human resource development”.
Manmohan Singh Tuesday described the visit as “very fruitful”.
He said that “India is very appreciative of the efforts being made by president (Thein Sein) for national reconciliation”.
Manmohan Singh met Myanmar’s pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi before leaving for home.
