Heat death toll in Odisha climbs to 21

Bhubaneswar : The death toll from sunstroke climbed to 21 in Odisha with officials Monday confirming the death of a 55-year-old man in Khordha district.

Sankar Samantaray, a resident of Punia Samantarapur village, died May 22. The local administration however only Monday confirmed that he died of sunstroke, a senior official of the state’s disaster management department here told IANS.

Meanwhile, the heat wave continued to grip several parts of the state. Many places in western parts of the state experienced searing heat, recording maximum temperatures between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius.

However, the costal districts remained slightly cool with some places witnessing the temperature in the range of 33 and 35 degrees Celsius.

Hirakud town in Sambalpur district, about 340 kms from Bhubaneswar recorded 46.1 degree Celsius Monday; the day’s highest of the state, weather officials said.
