New Delhi : The government Thursday said it plans to call an all-party meet on the report of the Group of Interlocutors for Jammu and Kashmir and urged the political parties to have an informed debate on the issue.
“We plan to have an all-party meet after a few workshops across the country are conducted by the interlocutors… we want an informed debate on the report before the government takes a view,” Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters here.
The three interlocutors — eminent journalist Dileep Padgaonkar, academician Radha Kumar, and former information commissioner M.M. Ansari — will act as resource persons for the workshops, he said, adding different views will emerge when the political parties debate the issue.
The report, which has been put up on the home ministry website to invite public opinion, has ruled out a return to the pre-1953 position and recommended setting up of a Constitutional Committee (CC) to review all Central Acts and Articles of the Constitution of India, extended to the state after the signing of the 1952 Agreement.
According to the report, the government should have a future-oriented approach taking into account the strategic, political, economic and cultural changes in Jammu and Kashmir, India and the south-Asian region.
