The remote-controlled Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosive consisted of 3.5 kg of RDX, two slots provided each with three detonators with 12 batteries and tightly packed in a steel box, from Wanjing area on National Highway-2.

“Had we not detected the IED wrapped in black polythene it would have killed innocents,” an Assam Rifles official said.

The Assam Rifles troopers sanitized and secured the area and the bomb disposal team later defused the IED explosive.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the rebels have planted the IED with a motive to attack security forces.

No arrests had been made so far, but a manhunt is on to nab the rebels, the police chief added.

There are more than 20 rebel outfits in Manipur with demands ranging from secession to greater autonomy.
