Beijing : World leaders sent congratulatory messages Wednesday to Barack Obama on his re-eletion as US president following his victory over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
Congratulating Obama on his victory, Chinese President Hu Jintao said China-US relations made positive progress during the past four years as a result of joint efforts, Xinhua reported.
The Chinese president said China is willing to work with the US for the future and strive for new progress in China-US relations to bring greater benefits to the two peoples as well as people of the world.
Hu said he and Obama have reached consensus on building a China-US cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit, and on exploring the construction of new relations between big powers.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also congratulated Obama and hoped with joint efforts, Sino-US relations will surely make headway.
British Prime Minister David Cameron congratulated Barack Obama, saying he was looking forward to continuing to work together.
“I have really enjoyed working with him over the last few years and I look forward to working with him again over the next four years,” Cameron said. “There are so many things that we need to do: we need to kick-start the world economy and I want to see an EU-US trade deal. ”
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda welcomed Obama’s re-election and expressed his hope to deepen bilateral cooperation.
In his message New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said: “With President Obama’s re-election, there will be many opportunities to enhance the relationship, which is built on shared values, and a commitment to improve the prosperity and well-being of our people through initiatives such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a congratulatory letter, said: “On your re-election as the President of the United States of America, I sincerely congratulate you.”
“I appreciate enormously our numerous meetings and discussions on all issues for the further development of German-American and transatlantic relations, not least about overcoming the global financial and economic crisis,” she wrote.
