Islamabad : A terror attack during a Muharram procession in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi was averted Sunday when a suspected terrorist was killed and a huge quantity of explosives were recovered from him, police said.
Police killed the suspect and also recovered arms and two suicide jackets from his possession in Manghopir area of the metropolis, Sindh Police Inspector General Fayaz Leghari was quoted as saying by Geo News.
Police raided the area around 4 a.m. Sunday but faced resistance from the terrorists.
Leghari said the terrorist had planned to enter the main procession during the Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram which marks the death anniversary of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Hussain Ibn-e-Ali 1,300 years ago.
Since the first day of Muharram Nov 16, six attacks on Shia Muslims have been reported in the country. At least 43 people have been killed and more than 200 injured in these attacks.
