A bench of Justice Umanath Singh and Justice Virendra Kumar Dixit ordered the stay on a petition filed by a Lucknow University student Hemant Singh.

The petitioner had requested the bench that the polls be held as per the age of candidates as on the date of their admission in the university and based on the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.

The petitioner has alleged that in the age of candidates provision, the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations were being violated. The petitioner also contended that if the age provisions were adhered to, many candidates would be declared invalid for contesting the polls.

In his petition, Singh pointed out that the Delhi University and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna University in Dehradun had implemented the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.

The Lucknow University administration had opposed the petition.

The court has fixed the date of next hearing for Oct 17.

Polls to student unions are being held across the state on the directives of the Samajwadi Party (SP) government. In its manifesto, the SP had promised to revive student unions in degree colleges and universities.

The previous government headed by Mayawati had banned student unions.
