Kolkata : The Left Front Wednesday protested against West Bengal chief electoral office’s decision to reschedule the revision of electoral rolls ahead of the panchayat elections next year.
“The revision of the electoral rolls was scheduled in two phases — first from Oct 1-19 and the second from Oct 30-Nov 9 — but the chief electoral office (CEO) has now decided to carry out the entire exercise in October,” said Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Rabin Deb.
“Due to the rescheduling, the final voters’ list will be declared by Jan 2 instead of Jan 15,” he claimed, alleging that the Trinamool Congress government was trying to influence the CEO to advance the elections.
Deb said the revision of the electoral rolls during the festive season would pose difficulties for people.
Though the state election commission has not announced the schedule of panchayat elections, both the opposition Left Front and the Congress have claimed that the Mamata Banerjee-led government was trying to advance elections for the village representatives.
