Moscow : Several Muslim families in southern Russia have complained that their daughters were not allowed to attend school wearing head scarves.
The families are from the Neftekumsk district of Stavropol in southern Russia, said a spokesperson of the regional muftiat.
The muftiat is concerned about the girls’ academic performance, the official said, as the girls have not been allowed at school for two weeks.
Till September, they were able to attend classes without any problems.
“The parents emphasise that in general, teachers do not discriminate the girls on their religion. But they are following the instructions of higher authorities,” the spokesman said.
The muftiat said this was the sixth group of parents who had addressed them with such a complaint. Residents of Arzgirsk and Step districts have filed a similar complaint.
Muhammad Rakhimov, the mufti of Stavropol, has spoken with the heads of districts, the governor and prosecutor of Stavropol to help resolve the situation.
