Eight injured as lift collapses in Ghaziabad

By IANS,

Ghaziabad : Eight people, including four members of a family, were injured Wednesday when a lift carrying them collapsed in a multi-storeyed building in the Indirapuram area here, police said.

Ashish Chug, his wife Vandana and their two children, along with three guests and their maid were in the lift when the cable snapped, sending them plummeting five storeys down.

All the occupants fortuitously survived but sustained multiple fractures and injuries.

“When the lift reached the third floor of the building, its cable broke sending us plummeting to the second level of the basement. When the lift hit the springs at the botom, it bounced up several times,” said Chug, who sustained multiple fractures.

The Chugs shifted in their newly acquired flat Wednesday.

All the injured were immediately rushed to hospital, where Chug and his wife were treated for multiple fractures, while their guests were treated for minor injuries.

The Chugs’ children had a miraculous escape as they remained unscathed in the accident, police said.

“The builder has not subscribed for annual maintenance from the manufacturer Otis hence the firm cannot be held responsible for the accident. The maintenance of the lifts is assigned to a local entrepreneur and an FIR will be lodged against it,” said G. Dey, president of the housing society’s RWA.

The RWA office-bearers met GDA Vice-Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, who has assured stern action against the builder.
