Villager killed in Assam crossfire

Guwahati: A village resident was killed and a policeman was injured during an shootout between the United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) militants and security forces in Assam’s Dibrugarh district Sunday, police said.

“Acting on a tip off, a joint team of army and police cordoned off the Nijaraparia village under Khowang in the district,” a senior police official said, adding this sparked off firing from the rebels, leaving the civilian dead and a police official injured.

The deceased was later identified as Papun Thakuria.

Four Ulfa cadres were also arrested during the incident, while some other cadres of the outfit managed to escape, police said.

The injured policemen was identified as Moran police station in-charge Utpal Bora, police said.
