Tanveer Singh, 15, had been referred to Srinagar Aug 25 after he was brought to a hospital in Baramulla town by his parents in a critical condition.

While the parents and relatives alleged that Singh was pushed out of the class window by a teacher from a two-storey building, others in the town said he leaped out after an argument with the teacher.

Informed sources said Singh had been barred by the school authorities from appearing in the annual examination after he did not do well in the tests conducted by the school.

Belonging to a poor family, Singh had pressed his teacher to allow him to appear in the examination.

Family members and relatives protested in the town Monday. Police told them that action would be taken against anyone responsible for the death.

Police sources said the concerned teacher had been detained for interrogation.

“According to the national curriculum framework policy 2005, no student can be detained or debarred from taking the Class 10 examination on the strength of his/her performance in a school test,” said an official from the state board of school education.
