Water riot in UP village leaves one dead, several injured

Lucknow: A spat over filling water from a community tap turned ugly and left one person dead and four others injured Tuesday when a man opened fire in Kasganj district, police said.

Kasganj is 300 km from here.

The incident took place in Dholna Sumara village when, after a tiff over filling water from a community tap, a man opened fire in which an aged man died.

Before the firing, both sides fought with iron rods and sticks in which many people were injured. Several rounds were later fired from both sides, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kasganj, Mahesh Kumar Mishra told IANS.

The deceased was identified as Mahaveer (70), whose body has been sent for autopsy.

Heavy police force has been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation of hostilities, said a police officer.
