The committee, which met Thursday for the first time since the Trinamool Congress pulled out of United Progressive Alliance earlier this month, reviewed the situation following decisions taken by the government including allowing foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.

After the meeting, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said that the allies of the Congress in the government discussed the decisions announced in the past 10 days.

“There was general satisfaction that many of the steps taken by the government, although some of them would put a burden on the people, have been welcomed by stakeholders as necessary and unavoidable,” he said.

Chidambaram said the need for more reforms was discussed and there was a feeling among the people that the measures were necessary.

The meeting of the UPA coordination committee was held days after the Congress Working Committee backed the government’s economic reforms decisions.

Apart from allowing FDI in multi-brand retail, the government took decisions on disinvestment, hiked price of diesel and put a cap on supply of subsidised cooking gas cylinders per family per year.
