Floods claim 10 lives in Spain

Madrid: A total of 10 people have died in floods triggered by heavy rainfall in southeast Spain over the last 48 hours.

Five of the victims died in the Community of Murcia. Three of them, including a nine-year-old girl, lost their lives when a part of a bridge on the A7 east coast motorway collapsed, reported Xinhua.

A sixth victim was found dead near the city of Lorca Saturday after she was swept away by rising flood waters.

Meanwhile, a man and a woman died in their car after being trapped by flood waters in their vehicle in the municipality of Guazamara de Cuevas del Almanzora in the province of Almeria.

Another two people, including a 60-year-old man, also died in Almeria.

The floods had claimed their first victim early Friday when the the Guadalhorce river breached its embankment close to the town of Alora, which is north of Malaga.

The Spanish military’s emergency unit has been called in and over 5,000 people have been evacuated.
