Serving professor of Jamia receives Padma Shree Award

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee in a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on April 5, 2013 presented the Padma Shree Awards to serving Professor of Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, Akhtarul Wasey. He was honoured along with other 80 awardees for his contribution in the field of literature and education.

The citation presented to him read, “Professor Akhtarul Wasey is recognized as a distinguished academic specialization in multidisciplinary study of Islam and Indian Muslims. He is an able administrator of many institutions concerned with socio-cultural affairs of the Indian Muslims; Editor of four journals of repute in English, Hindi and Urdu widely respected in the academic/intellectual circles the world over about myriad aspects of Islamic thought and history.”

He has written a number of books and his articles have been widely published in journals, newspapers, and magazines. He has been a representative at various fora, both nationally and internationally.

He is also the Vice-Chairman, Urdu Academy Delhi; General Secretary, South Asia Inter-Religious Council on HIV/AIDS (SAIRC) in collaboration with UNICEF and World Conference of Religions for Peace, New York, USA; President, India Interfaith Coalition on HIV/AIDS, India and Vice-President, Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature.
