Inmate suicide sparks UP prison riots

    Lucknow : Riots broke out in Kannauj prison in Uttar Pradesh Thursday after a prisoner committed suicide after being allegedly beaten up by a jail guard, officials said.

    Kamlesh Kumar, 48, was allegedly beaten up Wednesday night after which he hung himself in the toilet.

    As news of the death spread, prisoners went on the rampage and pelted stones at the guards and officials. They got on to the roof of the prison from where they raised anti-administration slogans.

    Police reinforcements were rushed to the prison and the prisoners were brought under control. Senior district officials are camping in the prison to ensure the violence does not escalate.

    District Magistrate Rupesh Kumar told IANS that a probe had been ordered into the rioting.

    Home department officials later said that based on preliminary findings, deputy jailor Om Prakash had been attached to the the prison headquarters in Lucknow. Five guards have been attached to the Fatehgarh prison.

    Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav represented Kannauj for a long time in the Lok Sabha. The seat is currently held by his wife Dimple.
