While a major road show had been planned for Rajnath Singh on his maiden visit to the state capital after becoming the party chief again, Rahul Gandhi, also making his first visit after becoming party no.2, was to arrive at Amethi, his parliamentary constituency, for a two-day stay.

According to Congress sources in New Delhi, Gandhi’s flight had to be cancelled after pilots advised against flying in bad weather due to heavy rains and poor visibility.

His plane was earlier expected to land at the Fursatganj airport in Amethi around 10 a.m., said sources.

In Lucknow, BJP UP state unit chief Laxmikant Bajpayi, while thanking party workers and supporters for their efforts to give Singh a hearty welcome, said the visit of the party chief had been put off.

“Rajnath Singh will not be coming and the new programme would be decided later,” he said. A road show and half a dozen party programmes had been planned to felicitate Singh.

Informing about the cancellation of Gandhi’s tour, party spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh told IANS in Lucknow that he would now be arriving Feb 7.

During the two-day tour, Gandhi will lay foundation stones of some development projects and interact with party workers and the public.
