Addressing a gathering of senior officials of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) here, Chidambaram said taxes should be collected in “just and fair manner” and there was no need to adopt any hostile approach.

“There is still seven weeks to go. So they should make efforts to reach as much close to the target as possible,” Chidambaram said while directing the officials to make their best efforts to achieve the budgetary target.

Chidambaram said the tax officials should take advantage of technological advances towards ensuring a “non-intrusive tax administration and promoting a non-adversarial tax environment”.

The government targets to mop up Rs.5.05 lakh crore from indirect taxes in the current financial year. In the first eight months of the year, the collection was Rs.2.50 lakh crore.
