Adv. Chaudhary, who is a senior lawyer at Mumbai High Court, will be speaking on the topic of Capital Punishment: An Agenda for Abolition. It was on Advocate Chaudhary’s initiative last year that 14 of the retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts petitioned to the President of India to commute the capital punishment in five different cases involving nine persons. The lecture will be chaired by Adv. Vrinda Grover, Senior Lawyer and Human Rights Activist.

This lecture is being organized in the memory of Shahid Azmi, a 32 year old Mumbai based young lawyer, who was shot dead by some ‘unidentified’ persons at his office on 11th February 2010. Shahid was a fearless crusader for justice; he was in love with the idea of justice, as one of his friends describes him. He was fighting many terror related cases, including for those falsely accused in the Malegaon blasts and 26/11 Mumbai Terror attack.
