Kiran Walia and Sayeeda Hameed to join Jamia VC in the ‘Awaz Uthao’ campaign

New Delhi: Dr. Kiran Walia, Minister for Women and Child Department and Education will be the Chief Guest at a public awareness programme “Awaz Uthao” to be organized by the Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia, in collaboration with Centre for Equity and Inclusion (CEQUIN).

The call of the campaign is to “unite to stop violence against women”. Najeeb Jung, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia will formally inaugurate the event and will deliver the Inaugural Address.

Dr. Sayeeda Hameed, Member, Planning Commission will be the Guest of Honour on this occasion

There will be an Interactive Discussion and feedback at 2 pm, followed by a Peace Walk from 4 pm onwards from Amphitheater.

This event is in the context of increasing crimes against women. The purpose of the event is to bring together various stakeholders and build a collective and holistic response to the issue. Large number of students and faculty from Jamia, as also community members from Jamia Nagar area, and Government representatives are expected to participate in the event.
The other partners of the event are Samajik Suvidha Sangam of the Delhi Government and the NGO Srijanatmak Manushi Sansthan.

They will perform a play “Humein Na Bachayega Rupaiya Shadi ki Bazaar Mein”, as part of the awareness campaign. This play is also a part of Safe City Campaign of the UN Trust Fund and Delhi Government.

This event is also a precursor to the Global ONE BILLION RISING on February 14, 2013, when organizations and individuals from across the world will collectively rise to stop violence against women. Given the current environment of heightened focus on the critical issue of violence against women, and the global mobilization for One Billion Rising, the Campaign – ‘Awaz Uthao’ is also going to be a forum for a Public Meeting and Peace Walk at 4 pm from the Amphitheatre (behind Ansari Auditorium), as a culmination of the Campaign.
