New Delhi :BJP’s Delhi unit chief Vijender Gupta has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to honour the Delhi gang-rape victim by posthumously awarding her the Ashoka Chakra, the country’s highest civilian award for bravery.
A statement from the BJP’s Delhi office Wednesday said the woman should be given the Ashok Chakra posthumously for bravery on Republic Day.
“The courage and bravery she exhibited has inspired the whole nation and shaken our national consciousness,” stated the letter.
In his letter, Gupta cited the case of Neerja Bhanot, 22, who became the youngest recipient of the Ashok Chakra. It was awarded to her posthumously.
Bhanot was a flight attendant and died while saving passengers from terrorists on board a hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 Sep 5, 1986. The aircraft was hijacked by four armed men while it was on the tarmac at Karachi, Pakistan.
