High Court wants rape trials in Bengal fast-tracked

Kolkata : In the wake of huge pendency of rape cases, Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Arun Mishra has directed the West Bengal government to establish sufficent number of fast track courts for speedy trial of such cases.

Chief Justice Mishra also gave a direction to all district judges for identification of one or more courts of additional district and sessions judge in each district for disposal of rape cases within four months. The direction, issued by Mishra Jan 16, was made public in a statement issued here Monday.

The fast track courts will be presided over by women judicial officers and have women staff as far as possible.

The state government earlier said it was planning to set up 45 fast track courts for hearing cases of rape and crimes against women. The first of such courts will be inaugurated Jan 23 in Malda district.
