Ranchi : A man, protesting the National Thermal Power Corporation’s (NTPC) upcoming plant in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district, was killed in a clash at the construction Tuesday, police said.
According to police, the protestor died after he was shot by the security guard of a contractor, while local villagers claimed that death occurred in police firing.
The construction of NTPC’s project office at the site in Hazaribagh, 110 km from Ranchi, began Tuesday and a group of the contractors awarded the work was at the site when a group of villagers, opposing the project due to the “poor” compensation for their lands, reached there and the clash ensued.
Police also reached the spot and opened fire in the air in a bid to stop the clash and disperse the villagers.
Four people were injured in the clash, and have been admitted to the local hospital for treatment.
Senior police officials are camping the spot to ensure law and order.
