“The Marwari community is one of the most generous and large hearted communities in India,” Narayanan said at the centenary celebrations of the Marwari Relief Society here.

“No nation can grow or perhaps can even survive without proper health care and the Marwari community has been playing a major role in this area, particularly in states like West Bengal,” he said.

Encouraging the spirit of philanthropic organisations, West Bengal Pradesh Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya lauded philanthropic organisations for serving the people by overcoming problems.

The Marwari Relief Society, an organisation funded by the Marwari community, has been providing service to the poor and needy ever since its establishment March 1, 1913. The society also runs a charitable hospital here.

A ‘Granth’ (book) featuring the history of all the philanthropic activities undertaken by various organisations as well as the Marwari Relief Society was released by Narayanan on the occasion.
