Oncology specialist gets Avvaiyar award

Chennai : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Friday gave the Avvaiyar award for 2013 to V. Shanta, chairperson of the Cancer Institute (WIA-Women’s Indian Association) here for her services to the welfare of cancer patients.

Named after Tamil poet Avvaiyar, the award is given to women who have done exceptional service in social reform, women’s welfare, communal harmony, and service to language, arts, science, culture, media, and management, among others.

The award, which is given on International Women’s Day every year, carries a cash prize of Rs.100,000, a gold medal weighing eight grams and a certificate.

A Padma Bhushan awardee in 2006, Shanta was also the winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for public service in 2005.
