Hyderabad: Student Islamic Organization of India (SIO) Andhra Pradesh unit expressed it condolence over the suicide of Kashmiri Ph.D. student Mudassir Kamaran at English and Foreign Language University Hyderabad (EFLU).
SIO in its press statement condemned the handling of this sensitive issue by University administration which tried to subjugate the matter by terming Mudassir Homosexual, alleging he indulge in sodomy and a breakup from his partner was the reason for Mudassir’s extreme step.
SIO condemned character assassination of Mudassir by the university administration and demanded high level unbiased investigation by a committee in this case which should be consisted of student unions and university administration.
Meanwhile SIO also expressed concern over the role of EFLU proctor Harish Vijra and his high-handedness in Mudassir’s case. SIO believe that proctor has miserably failed in handling a petty complaint and unnecessarily brought police into the scene.
SIO also expressed its concern over lack of counselors in the university campus to deal with sensitive issues like Mudassir’s case. SIO express its fear that more suicide incidents may occur in the campus when depressed students will not have any reach to the counselors.
SIO termed the remark of EFLU Vice Chancellor Prof. Sunaina Singh that this issue is ‘hijacked’ by ‘student mob’ as unfortunate. SIO advised Prof. Singh to play more proactive and unbiased role in this case.
SIO has demanded Rs. 25 lakh compensation to Mudassir’s family and other facilities by the Central and State Governments. SIO expressed its solidarity with protesting Student unions and academicians in the campus who are demanding justice for Mudassir.
