New Delhi : The central government has asked state governments to set up state-level nutrition councils to address the problem of malnutrition, the Lok Sabha was informed Friday.
To address the issue of malnutrition, the prime minister’s council on India’s nutrition challenges was constituted in 2008 for policy directions, review and effective coordination between ministries for nutrition at the central level, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
The National Nutrition Policy 1993 and the National Plan of Action on Nutrition 1995 have provided clear cut institutional structures starting from national to grassroots level, she said.
Under this, state governments and union territories are required to set up an apex state-level nutrition council chaired by chief minister; an inter-departmental coordinating committee headed by the chief secretary and consider constituting similar bodies at the district level.
