1993 Mumbai serial blasts – How March 12 unfolded

Mumbai was rocked by 12 powerful bomb blasts 20 years ago, in what were India’s first major, precisely co-ordinated serial explosions that claimed more than 260 lives and left the country stunned.

The blasts, which ripped the country’s commercial capital March 12, 1993, were a revenge attack for the Dec 1992-Jan 1993 bloody riots in the city. The riots had occurred after the Dec 6, 1992 demolition of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya by Hindu groups.

Here is a list of the sites targetted in March 1993, the time at which the blasts occurred and the number of lives lost at each site.

* Fishermen’s Colony, Mahim – Blast 14.45 p.m. – 3 dead

* Worli Century Bazar – Blast 14.45 p.m. – 113 dead

* Zaveri Bazar – Blast 15.00 p.m. – 17 dead

* Hotel Sea Rock, Bandra – Blast 15.10 p.m. – N/A

* Plaza Cinema, Dadar – Blast 15.15 p.m. – 10 dead

* Hotel Juhu Centaur – Blast 15.20 p.m. – 3 hurt

* Sahar Airport vicinity – Blast 15.30 p.m. – N/A

* Hotel Airport Centaur – Blast 15.40 p.m. – 2 dead
