Antony to inaugurate meet on defence self-sufficiency

New Delhi : Defence Minister A.K. Antony will Saturday inaugurate a three-day annual conference here, which will see top defence scientists, experts from three services and industry and think tanks deliberating on strategies to boost self-sufficiency in defence sector.

The deliberations – ‘Technology Consolidation Leading to Fast Track Induction’ – will be part of the 37th DRDO Directors’ Conference.

According to an official release, the deliberations will cover topics related to long-term requirements of armed forces, technology development plan and meeting the requirements in the broader perspective of emerging technologies.

Associated manufacturing technologies required to translate technological developments into quality products will also be discussed.

The conference will include round table discussions on the future threat scenarios and the technologies required to meet the associated challenges and the need to enhance the participation of private sector to accelerate indigenisation.

The release said that DRDO’s sustained efforts supported by various stakeholders have brought down the import content of defence acquisitions from 70 percent to around 45 percent.

Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh, National Security Advisor Shivshanker Menon and senior officers from three forces, defence ministry and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will attend the conference.

Young scientists awards and the best performance awards for 2012 will be given away at the conference.
