Troopers guarding the Ballad border post, about 55 km from here, noticed some movement around 5 a.m. and opened fire to challenge a group of people trying to infiltrate across the border into India.

“Our troops opened fire to challenge them. The firing went on from 5.10 a.m. to 5.35 a.m.,” the official said.

The infiltrators were pushed back into Pakistani territory and an extensive search operation was launched for any person who might have sneaked in, the official said.

India shares about 200 km of international border (IB) with Pakistan from Punjab up to what is known as the Chicken’s Neck area near Jammu. After that there is 720 km of Line of Control (LOC) up to Ladakh.
