Three Meghalaya policemen arrested

    Shillong: Three Meghalaya police personnel were arrested Saturday for stealing non-ferrous scrap material valued at over Rs.20 lakh from a truck on the Shillong bypass in East Khasi Hills, police said.

    “We have arrested sub-inspector Sudarshan Sangma, unarmed branch constable Claipson M. Marak and MPRO (Meghalaya Police Radio Organisation) operator constable Basant Lama for their involvement in the robbery,” Mariahom Kharkrang, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, told journalists.

    He said the three were posted at the newly set up police station in the Mawryngkneng area, 50 km from the state capital Shillong. Kharkrang said Nov 7, the three hijacked the truck loaded with copper, brass and aluminium, took it towards the Shillong bypass and later kidnapped driver Saidullah Alam Laskar and one Deep Kumar Nath.

    “We have seized mobile phones from the house of Marak and the Swift car used for committing the robbery,” Kharkrang said.
